SUMMARY:Metropolitan Club's 58th Anniversary Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:The Metropolis Club’s celebration of their 58th Year anniversary was a big hit! Friends\, family\, and the community made up the attendance with jubilee. And let’s not forget the tasty spaghetti dinner\, salad\, and dessert served at the event! Music was also provided by a local D.J. as the event was culminated with a dance for the crowd afterwards. A flat screen TV and an air conditioner were raffled as a door prize.  The Club raised a great amount of money to help provide needed services to the community. \nRest assured that DC Recovery’s Peer Operated Center will be the central location for many more future Ward 5 community events. SUMMARY:Presentation (Community Based Services) for Returning Citizens @ Corrections
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 3\, 2024\, DC Recovery’s Brian Person\, Community Outreach Coordinator\, Certified Peer Recovery Supervisor\, and Certified Harm Reduction and DC Recovery’s Demetrius Jones\, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and Trainer introduced their community-based services to the D.C. Department of Corrections’ Returning Citizens\,  Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program (RSAT).  Mrs. Cathy Voss\, LICSW and the Supervisory Correctional Treatment Specialist maintains the program’s current structure which allows a treatment cohort to complete the program every couple of months. Upon successful completion of the program\, some participants are released to the community. At Friday’s presentation\, Mrs. Voss mentioned\, “I have started bringing service providers in\, prior to clients being release\, so they can have personal introductions to what is “out there” and she further stated\, “I would love to be able to do this on a “regular” basis\, as each group nears completion.”  This effective strategy not only benefits participants\, but also promotes partnership within the provider community. \nDC Recovery is looking forward to our next presentation at the Department of Corrections and to intake upon their release\, the courageous participants into our programs held at the Peer Operated Center of Excellence located at 5656A 3rd Street\, N.W. Washington\, DC 20011. The effectiveness of the outreach effort is partially due to the organizational efforts of Mrs. Voss and the Department of Corrections in providing a private setting for DC Recovery’s Peer Specialists to chat with participants. This enabled the Returning Citizens to express a genuine organic response to the hard and fast questions about long-term recovery and an exit plan. The skilled Peer Specialists provided every opportunity for the participants to communicate honest\, spontaneous\, and unpretentious responses. \nWe applaud and honor all partnership efforts of the Department of Corrections! Well done.

SUMMARY:What a Success! The Men's Ministry Townhall Panel
DESCRIPTION:The Town Hall Discussion was a huge success on Saturday\, April 20\, 2024 at DC Recovery’s Center located at 5656A 3rd Street\, N.E. Approximately 30 attendees with a focus to unite\, were present. The mission for the Town Hall Group discussion is to help recruit our young men in the community back into the church. Mr. Brian Person who is responsible for our Community Outreach along with Mr. Holloway Coates collaborated to use the Center as a “safe space” outside of the church where the young men openly discussed some of the obstacles they face when coming to church. Mr. Johnson also had books\, t-shirts and other literature representing the great Malcom X and his accomplishments during the Civil Rights Movement for sale. What an educational experience! \nSeveral performers were present and the crowd loved it. Mr. Roger Wright and his Recovery in the Arts (R.I.T.A.) was another success in connecting the community with our clients in recovery. SUMMARY:Opioid Use in the Senior Community (Vicksburgh)
DESCRIPTION:The outreach teams from the 5th District Police Community and DC Recovery prove the power of unity! On January 10\, 2024\, the teams merged together at the Vicksburgh Senior Center to educate the senior community on the vast opioid use amongst seniors. Officer J. Johnson\, head of the 5th District Police Community Outreach\, requested DC Recovery to present the important information to approximately 25 audience members. \nProperty Manager of the Vicksburgh Senior Center\, Ms. Jackson\, is responsible for the center located at 3005 Bladensburg Avenue N.W. She was instrumental in providing center access for this important day. Judy West\, Demetrius Jones\, and Brian Person from the DC Recovery Team conducted a Q&A session after the presentation. To enhance our glorious and productive day with the District Police\, our beloved team member Demetrius Jones who was appointed the Ambassador of Opioid Abatement for the District by our Mayor this year\, gave a thorough NARCAN presentation accompanied with books cards to illustrate the proper dose application. Judy West closed with the Fentanyl strips for community use and with the family members who may get drugs acquired on the street. She also informed the audience of our many social media sites explaining our services offered at our Peer Operated Center at 5656A 3rd Street\, N.E. \nThanks to all who participated and who made January 10\, 2024 a great day!

DC Recovery’s support staff was phenomenal in making our presence known in the DC community. The event organizers\, The h3 Project\,  Outreach partners\, Police officers and lots of community members all . DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Recovery Month Kickoff Luncheon showcased the successful strides made in our DC community by organizations such as SAMSHA\, DC Recovery\, and the Faces & Voices of Recovery. The event was held at the Columbus Club Room at Union Station with guest speakers from SAMHSA\, ONDCP\, and other key public officials. \nDr. Rahul Gupta\, Director of the National Drug Control Policy awarded an award from President Biden to Patty McCarthy\, Chief Executive Director\, Faces & Voices of Recovery at the luncheon today. \nFaces & Voices of Recovery partnered with SAMSHA for the first-ever Walk for Recovery which immediately followed the luncheon. \n

DESCRIPTION:Every year something fulfilling happens in communities across the country – an event called “National Night Out”. This unique event occurs annually on the first Tuesday in August. It is a special gathering to promote the partnership of the police community and its citizens to build a safer and more respected environment. This year in 2021\, DC Recovery was honored when Derek Staten\, the Fourth District Community Outreach Coordinator for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)\, asked them to participate in this year’s National Night Out. \nSo on August 3rd from 4:00pm – 8:00pm DC Recovery joined the MPD at the Emery Heights Community Center located at 5701 Georgia Ave NW\, Washington\, DC 20011 in fellowship with the community and presented information to assist those with substance use disorders and related mental illnesses. What an evening! What an opportunity! What a blessing to be able to help those in need and have fun along the way.
