DESCRIPTION:     \nOctober’s Variety Show was another huge success! Mr. Roger Wright alias Tobal daGriot (CEO) of Raisin Da Bottom Productions held its 13th year anniversary celebration at the Recovery Community Alliance Peer Operated Center on Saturday October 26th 2024. Dozens of patrons were able to enjoy a live performance by Count Crackula and his zombie minions.  The protagonist delivered harrowing tales of drug addiction like Tales from the Crypt and Dope Man’s Slave.  They were also sharing humor in the form of skits with the law and relationships and an open mic! The monthly raffle gave all the potential opportunity to win Cash Money/Gas Money prizes.  They ended the evening with refreshments for everyone.  Tobal and his team made the celebration a tremendous success. \nCheck out the photos! SUMMARY:Addressing Stigma In Our Communities
DESCRIPTION:          \nWhen it comes to overdoses caused by opioids\, the highest rates of death were in West Virginia\, where 49.6 out of every 100\,000 persons died from an opioid-involved overdose death. Coming in second was Ohio with an opioid overdose rate of 39.2. The third highest rates of death occurred in Washington\, D.C.\, where the rate was 34.7. These numbers and rankings for opioid-related overdoses are unacceptable and therefore organizations like DC Recovery and community providers will continue to ban together to one day eradicate these overdoses and all illnesses related to substance use disorders (SUD). \nOn Friday\, September 27th\, 2024\, Community Bridges\, Oxford House\, Volunteers of America\, and DC Recovery joined forces at our Peer Operated Center to discuss how to combat the stigma surrounding SUD. The awesome turnout of providers\, clinicians\, and community participants provided the conversation and education needed to better serve those in the communities who are on the courageous road to long-term recovery. DESCRIPTION:The “Rise to the Challenge: Make an Impact on DC’s Opioid Crisis” event was a success! The 2024 theme for the 4th Annual Opioid Union Station event took place on September 18\, 2024  from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in front of Union Station located at Columbus Circle\, 50 Massachusetts Avenue\, N.E\, Washington\, D.C. 20002. Many participated included the Mayor’s Police Outreach team\, Officer Jeremiah Jones and his new task force\, Dr. Ami Angell\, the CEO of h3 Project Team and the Union Station MPD Police staff. \nDC Recovery was fortunate to participate and provide a table with educational handouts. DESCRIPTION:       \nCommunity\, professional\, and technological inclusion for our mental and physically-challenged citizens. \nThis is what the  DC Department of Behavioral Health\, the DC Office of Disability Rights\, and certainly DC Recovery Community Alliance (DC Recovery) believe: Community\, professional\, and technological inclusion for our mental and physically-challenged citizens. That is why DC Recovery attended the 16th Annual Olmstead Community Integration Conference on Tuesday\, September 17th\, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. \nThe United States Supreme Court ruled in 1999 that segregation of persons with disabilities is discrimination and violates the American Disabilities Act. Therefore\, public entities including state and local governments must provide appropriate and available community-based services to persons with disabilities.  As a result\, in 2012 the Office of Disability Rights published the District’s Olmstead Community Integration Plan. Minister Hynson and his team were at the park doing the “real” tasks of directly improving our community by feeding the homeless\, and distributing bibles\, clothes\, and additional resources. \nBrian extended his hand to Minister Hynson to plan future outreach efforts in coordination with the Minister who visits the park every other weekend. On September 5\, 2024\, The Clinical Education Alliance (CEA) hosted a “What Did We Learn” dinner at Mastro’s Steakhouse located on 600 13th Street NW to recap the information presented earlier at the AIDS 2024 workshop from 6pm to 9pm. The presenters were Drs. Roger Bedimo and Princy N. Dr. Duvernay hosted our Dual-diagnosed Zoom class during the COVID pandemic affectionately called “Double\, Trouble”\, and Ms. Imani Walker\, Recovery Support Coordinator DBH. \nFaces & Voices also created a first-of-its-kind national RCO certification. This new certification\, along with our Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services (CAPRSS)\, cements our already-high standards for peer support service delivery. DESCRIPTION:     \nAfter almost 30 years\, the World Convention returned to Washington\, DC\, 29 August – 1 September 2024! As expected\, it was the largest convention ever held grossing over 18\,000. The convention proved to be equipped with the facilities required to hold a massive crowd\, the security required for a large event in a capital city\, translations\, ADA accommodations\, equipment and labor\, and the technology to make the meetings visible and available in the convention center and around the world. \nThe World Convention of Narcotics Anonymous (WCNA) workgroup and more than 1500 volunteers made this event possible. Each team member exemplified this year’s theme\, the “Power of Love” with their actions and goodwill to bring the complex vision into reality. The NA World Convention is an unforgettable experience. SUMMARY:Community Day & Health Fair - Peace Lutheran Church
DESCRIPTION:     \nOn Saturday\, 08/10/24\, Mrs. Yvonne Brown the Outreach Director at Peace Lutheran Church requested that DC Recovery participates in their annual Health Fair in Ward 7. The significant purpose of the health fair is to educate the community about the Opioid crisis in D.C. and to provide them with a hands-on training of an actual Overdose reversal using Narcan. DC Recovery set up a table at the fair and employees like Demetrius Jones provided much needed information. Demetrius is the appointed Ambassador of Opioid Abatement by our Mayor Bowser and Brian Person\, DC Recovery’s Outreach Coordinator and Narcan Trainer both trained the fair attendees. Their thorough training assisted the participants in successfully reciting the instructions provided during the training session. DC Recovery handed out Narcan samples\, written literature\, pamphlets\, hand sanitizer and masks.  The church provided free chips\, sodas\, and served yummy grilled food. \nThe well-planned event gave DC Recovery the chance to learn from other participating organizations such as the church’s organization\, Women of Peace\, and the DAMIEN Outreach Ministries that supports LGBTQ\, Black/African American\, Youths\, Asian\, at risk persons\, etc. Last but not least we were honored and blessed to be asked by Dr. Nura Lane\, the Program Director for Wards 7 & 8 Prevention Center to take a picture with us while subsequently sharing her impeccable knowledge and resources. \nThe church also distributed T-shirts and backpacks and other school supplies to kids going back to school.

DESCRIPTION:The Metropolis Club’s celebration of their 58th Year anniversary was a big hit! Friends\, family\, and the community made up the attendance with jubilee. And let’s not forget the tasty spaghetti dinner\, salad\, and dessert served at the event! Music was also provided by a local D.J. as the event was culminated with a dance for the crowd afterwards. SUMMARY:Presentation (Community Based Services) for Returning Citizens @ Corrections
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 3\, 2024\, DC Recovery’s Brian Person\, Community Outreach Coordinator\, Certified Peer Recovery Supervisor\, and Certified Harm Reduction and DC Recovery’s Demetrius Jones\, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and Trainer introduced their community-based services to the D.C. Department of Corrections’ Returning Citizens\,  Residential Substance Abuse Treatment Program (RSAT).  Mrs. Cathy Voss\, LICSW and the Supervisory Correctional Treatment Specialist maintains the program’s current structure which allows a treatment cohort to complete the program every couple of months. Upon successful completion of the program\, some participants are released to the community. At Friday’s presentation\, Mrs. Voss mentioned\, “I have started bringing service providers in\, prior to clients being release\, so they can have personal introductions to what is “out there” and she further stated\, “I would love to be able to do this on a “regular” basis\, as each group nears completion.”  This effective strategy not only benefits participants\, but also promotes partnership within the provider community. \nDC Recovery is looking forward to our next presentation at the Department of Corrections and to intake upon their release\, the courageous participants into our programs held at the Peer Operated Center of Excellence located at 5656A 3rd Street\, N.W. Washington\, DC 20011. The effectiveness of the outreach effort is partially due to the organizational efforts of Mrs. Voss and the Department of Corrections in providing a private setting for DC Recovery’s Peer Specialists to chat with participants. This enabled the Returning Citizens to express a genuine organic response to the hard and fast questions about long-term recovery and an exit plan. The skilled Peer Specialists provided every opportunity for the participants to communicate honest\, spontaneous\, and unpretentious responses. \nWe applaud and honor all partnership efforts of the Department of Corrections! Well done.

DESCRIPTION:The Town Hall Discussion was a huge success on Saturday\, April 20\, 2024 at DC Recovery’s Center located at 5656A 3rd Street\, N.E. Approximately 30 attendees with a focus to unite\, were present. The mission for the Town Hall Group discussion is to help recruit our young men in the community back into the church. Mr. Brian Person who is responsible for our Community Outreach along with Mr. Holloway Coates collaborated to use the Center as a “safe space” outside of the church where the young men openly discussed some of the obstacles they face when coming to church.
