Dr. Deborah Rose\, a behavioral neurologist\, breaks down how changes in reward\, stress\, and executive function circuits contribute to compulsive substance use\, and how those same circuits can be reshaped through treatment\, connection\, and recovery. The goal is to offer a deeper understanding of what people struggling with addiction are up against\, and how we can better support their recovery. Addiction is not a failure of willpower\, but a treatable brain disease with multiple pathways to healing.\n\n\n\nBreak – 10mins\n\n11:00am – 12:20pm\nDr. Shekila Melchior\nA Somatic Approach to Treating Co-Occurring Disorders\n\nThis session explores how somatic approaches can enhance treatment for individuals navigating substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Attendees will learn how the autonomic nervous system shapes symptoms and how trauma manifests in the body. The presenter will introduce Somatic Experiencing as a modality\, with an emphasis on integrating somatic practices into culturally responsive care.
